Asphalt Patching

Asphalt Patching

Timely patching of asphalt paving can reduce deterioration of existing pavement, create a safer environment, reduce liability, and provide a more pleasant appearance. Asphalt Patching generally is generally one of two types; 'Surface Parching' or 'Remove and Replace'.

Surface Patching is best used when the base is sound and the damaged area is slightly depressed. The procedure starts with cleaning and drying the area of the patch, applying a primer or 'tack coat' and finished with a mechanically compacted layer of hot mix asphalt. Even though the edges of Surface Patches are blended into the existing asphalt surface, the patch is sometimes slightly higher than the rest of the pavement. 'Surface Patching' is more economical but usually it is not as substantial or as long lasting as 'Removal and Replacement' of damaged asphalt paving.

Surface Preperation Surface Patch

Removal and Replacement of severally deteriorated pavement allows the repair of any defective base and is a more long term solution than 'Surface Patching'. Prior to installing new pavement the damaged area is saw cut and excavated to whatever depth required to find a substantial layer for installing the pavement and/or installation of additional base . Hot mix asphalt is installed and mechanically compacted. If seal coating and new striping are added to this type of patch, the patch can become nearly invisible.
